Be relevant.

Quality posts and pages rank best when the topic is something that is currently trending in a search. If you are addressing an issue from 10 years ago, you're not really speaking to today’s browsers. This also means you will have to go through old content on your site from time to time and update it. That’s a good thing though, because search engines like newly updated sites.

Be accurate.

If you are falsifying information, you are doing a disservice to your readers and yourself. Search engines will catch on and penalize your URL. Being in Google jail could be a death sentence for your brand.

Be readable.

This means avoiding legalese or talking over the typical reader’s head. Your aim is to have an 8th grade reading level at the highest. Any higher than that and you’ve lost the reader and search engine ranking. Make sure your content is also easy to digest. This means break up long paragraphs and sentences, use subheadings, and use consecutive sentences.

Be extensive.

One or two paragraphs for a page will not cut it, according to Google. SEO apps like Rank Math and Yoast set the bar at 300-600 words, but research is showing that the top-ranking posts tend to be at least 1,000 words or more. It might seem difficult to go on about a subject for so long, but there are ways you can make it work. Tell a story or give an example. Give a history lesson. Add a testament or two. Just make sure your fluffier content is lower down the page.

Be original.

Plagiarism was not cool in school, and it is not cool now. If your content is caught copying another site’s content, you not only face being ranked lower, but you could be at risk of being sued. There are a lot of laws put in place to protect a business’s website content. Make sure you follow them.

Be resourceful.

If you have some information that you think the reader could benefit from outbound or inbound information, add a link in there. This will actually help boost your rating, as search engines love internal and outbound links.
